Il Gatto Mammone, una figura centrale del folklore italiano che ho voluto reinterpretare per il contest IADR. Anticamente, questa creatura era usata come uno spauracchio per spaventare i bambini: il ‘mostro’ nero con la M sulla fronte.

Nella mia visione, però, il Mammone non è un demone, ma un rifugio. Ho trasformato il suo corpo in un cosmo notturno, punteggiato di stelle che hanno il potere di calmare. Se guardate il bambino, la sua camicia da notte sfuma dal nero al bianco: è il momento esatto in cui la paura si scioglie nell’abbraccio del gatto. Perché i bambini non vanno spaventati, ma protetti e ascoltati.”

 The Gatto Mammone, a fascinating figure from Italian folklore created for the IADR contest. Historically, he was the ‘bogeyman’—a scary black cat used to frighten children into obedience.

In my work, I have reclaimed this legend to show a different truth: the monster is actually a sanctuary. I sculpted the cat’s body as a dreamlike cosmos, filled with stars that bring peace. Notice the child’s nightgown: it changes from black to white as he approaches the cat. It represents the exact moment fear turns into serenity. My message is simple: children should never be frightened; they should be listened to and protected.

DESCRIPTION

The artwork is a two-figure composition: the imposing Gatto Mammone and a small child. The cat is reinterpreted through a “positive-fantasy” lens. Its body represents an oneiric cosmos: from a lush base of flowers and leaves to a torso depicting a starry night sky. The child wears a nightgown that undergoes a symbolic metamorphosis: initially black, soaked in fear, it fades into pure white as the child approaches the cat’s embrace, finding serenity and safety.

Note: The Gatto Mammone has inspired countless works in literature and music, including a famous Italian folk song that has enchanted generations.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

• Technique: Nuno-felting (body) followed by needle-painting; needle-felting (heads of the cat and child); internal armature with articulated wrists for the cat’s hands; sewing, dyeing, and felt painting.

• Materials: Wool, silk, assorted fibers, dyes, internal wire armature.

• Dimensions:

  • Cat: approx. 18 x 33 x 16 cm (approx. 7.1″ x 13″ x 6.3″)

  • Child: approx. 5 x 15 cm (approx. 2″ x 5.9″)

La scultura ha vinto il primo premio categoria Fiber art-Professional della convention 2026 International Art Doll Registry 2026 “Miti e Leggende”
